PRO'S CORNER: PROFILING PROS & CONS

Profiling, also known by the old school players as a rocker, is a means of grinding your skates into a shape that best suits your skating style. While the hallow is relates to the sharpness of your skates – it is the depth between edges, the profile speaks to your balance and how you “get into” your edges. The two pair nicely to help you optimize your stride.

To learn more about how a profile can help you, please read through our pros and cons of getting your skates professional profiled.

PROS

UNIFORM RADIUS

Skate steel is mass produced and, as such, are not always exactly uniform. A custom profile will get you the exact same profile on both skates.

FIT FOR YOU

A custom profile can be dialed in to meet your exact needs. If you like more glide, get a flatter profile. More turning radius? Go smaller. Like to be more on your toes or heels, a custom profile and handle that as well.

PERFORMANCE CONSISTENCY

Ever have the fear of getting new skates or steel and worry that they won’t feel the same as your old ones? When you have a custom profile that is right for you and your stride, you know how your skates will perform every time you take the ice whether it’s new or old steel or skates.

NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL

Factories set up their steel punches with the most common denominator in mind, however that doesn’t work for everyone. Most adult skates come from the factory with a 10-12ft radius depending on the manufacturer for all sizes from 6 to 12. That is a large size range to cover with one steel profile. A player skating on an 11 radius in a size 6 skate will have a very different experience than a player wearing a size 12 skate. A custom profile can get you a radius that is proportional to your skate size because one size doesn’t fit all.

CONS

COST

The biggest issue with custom profiles is the cost, especially if you have not dialed in your preferred profile in the past. When getting your skates profiled at Binnie’s Jason will ask you questions about your position, playing, and skating style to help determine your optimal profile.

TIME

Getting your skates profiled takes time and is not as simple as getting them sharpened. Often, you may have to leave your skates for a few days to a week. If you have extra steel for your skates, we recommend leaving with us the steel only that you want profiled so you don’t lose ice time.

FEAR

Most people take their skates out of the box, get them sharpened “normal” and go, so doing something a little more technical can feel unnatural. Trying something new is always scary! Be brave, push your fears aside and get a better stride with a custom profile

OPTIONS

While options don’t seem like it would be a con, sometimes having too many options can be a deterrent to change. At Binnie’s we get it! We offer two types of profile services – Cag One and Pro Sharp – with both services providing many options. Don’t let this worry you, though! Jason is a pro and will help you choose the exact profile for you turning this con into a pro!
