How to Repair a Broken Hockey Skate Lace
Broken Laces
Hockey skate laces are essential in ensuring that your skates fit snugly and securely to your feet. But, with wear and tear, they can sometimes break, leaving you with the frustration of trying to lace up your skates with a broken lace. While you should always try to replace the lace, sometime you may be forced to repair it for a short fix. The most common way to fix a broken lace if you cannot immediately replace it is to tie the lace back together.
To begin, determine where the lace break is and if you have enough extra length to tie a knot in the lace. If you have enough length, adjust the spacing of the lace relative to the break and tie the two ends together so that the knot is over the tongue, between the two eyelets. If you do not have enough length or the location of the break is in a weird spot, you may have to skip an eyelet to create a better spacing and generate extra length by removing one set of crosses.
Have a lot of extra length in your laces or did the lace break near one of the ends of the lace? This is your lucky break! You may be able to simply relace your skates, adjusting for the slightly shorter lenght.
In all instances, if you can, use a lighter or heat gun to melt the ends of the lace where it broke, it will prevent further fraying.
Missing or Frayed Tips
Skate laces have either a coated tip or a pressed tip that helps you feed the lace through the eyelet. These tips, over time, can break, go missing, or become frayed making it difficult to lace your skates. To repair a broken tip till you can replace your laces, try these ideas:
Tightly wrap them with a small piece of tape to recreate the plastic or pressed tip.
Heat the frayed tip with lighter or other heat source to prevent further fraying and create a solid surface to push through the eyelet.
Use a pointed tool or sharp object like a scissors or even a ball point pen to CAREFULLY push the lace through the eyelet.
