Welcome to our first Mod Monday feature!

Goalies are said to be a different breed. Our first feature shows us one reason why. While it’s not uncommon for all players, particularly those that have been playing for a long time, to have certain habits with their gear, goalies have far and away the most. The shown skates are a prime example.

This goalie loves an old-school shallow hollow of 7/8” with an off-set edge alignment. When asked why, it was explained that they started playing in the mid-90’s and retain a stance that is more square than a wide butterfly-ready position, and they use more shuffles than T-glides. The shallower hallow makes shuffling more efficient. The off-set edges assists in keeping the outside edge out of the way on shuffles - forcing quicker stops and adjustments on the inside edge - and for improved attack angle on down play adjustments.

This style of cut is not for everyone, but even some pro’s do or have used this method of off-set edges over the years - Henrik Lundqvist and Matt Murray to name two. If you think it is something you may want to try or you want to explore more skate sharpening options, contact Jason.
